Write a letter to the Commissioner of Police, Calcutta on the Loud-Speaker nuisance in the city.
The Commissioner of Police,
It is much against my will that I feel constrained to report to you on Loudspeaker nuisance in the city during the last Saraswati Puja. My father was at that time down with an attack of para-typhoid. He needed all the rest and quiet that he could get. But to my horror, the organizers of the Puja erected their pandal almost under the windows of the sick-room, right on the public roads. Besides, the loudspeaker kept on blaring an endless series of so- called popular songs at all hours of day and night. My father kept tossing in his bed and went without a wink of sleep for a couple of days. As the condition of his health did not permit he could not be removed to another house. This brought about a serious setback and his life is hanging in the balance now. I requested some of the organizers to tone down the volume of the loudspeaker, but they did not heed my request.
It is pity that our festivals have become almost identified with loudspeakers. It is high time that the police should do something to control its use as the suffering citizens feel perfectly helpless in this matter.
